Cabinet Refacing or Replacement--What's the Difference?
by Charity Shumway

"Do something about the cabinets" is at the top of many a kitchen remodeling "to do" lists. If new cabinets are on your wish list, the great news is that you have options galore. The first step is deciding whether to replace the cabinets altogether or to refurbish the ones you have. Cabinet refacing, in which just the outer layer of your cabinets is replaced, can be a great alternative to totally new cabinets. Here's what to consider.

Consideration #1: How's Your Storage?
The difference between kitchen cabinets that need a total body makeover and cabinets that just need a face lift comes down to function. Do you have enough storage? Are your cabinets well arranged, giving you an efficient kitchen workflow? If they aren't, cabinet refacing won't get to the heart of your problems. During cabinet refacing, you may be able to make small tweaks, but if you want to truly change the way your kitchen functions, cabinet replacement is the better choice.

Consideration #2: What's Your Kitchen Remodeling Budget?
Cabinet refacing is les expensive than total cabinet replacement. If your cabinets look outdated or are a little worse for the wear, cabinet refacing can transform their appearance and the look of your whole kitchen for a fraction of the cost of having all new cabinets designed, built, and installed.

Consideration #3: What's Your Time Horizon?
Kitchen remodeling projects take time, but if you're not up for the sometimes lengthy process of custom kitchen cabinet design and installation, cabinet refacing offers a nice short cut. You can have what look like entirely new kitchen cabinets in as little as a day.

Consideration #4: Are Your Current Kitchen Cabinets Sturdy?
If your current kitchen cabinets are well made, that's another reason to consider cabinet refacing. High-quality, sturdy cabinets can last for years and years, and it's likely that you or your home??s previous owners spent a fair amount of money on them. Cabinet refacing can lengthen their life and help you make the most of that investment. By the same token, if your current cabinets aren't well made, replacing them is likely to be a better investment than refacing them.

Cabinet refacing and cabinet replacement are both smart moves. Which is best for you all depends on your kitchen. Either way, get ready to cross "do something about the cabinets" off the list.
